What are Speed and Velocity?

Speed is a scalar quantity that refers to "how fast an object is moving." It is usually measured in units of distance per time, such as meters per second or miles per hour.

Velocity, on the other hand, is a vector quantity that refers to "the rate at which an object changes its position." It is measured in units of distance per time but also includes information about the direction of movement. For example, a car moving at 60 miles per hour to the east has a different velocity than a car moving at 60 miles per hour to the west.

The main difference between speed and velocity is that speed is a scalar quantity and only describes the rate at which an object is moving, while velocity is a vector quantity that describes both the rate and the direction of an object's movement.

General Formula

Speed = Distance / Time

In this formula, distance is the total amount of ground covered by an object, and time is the amount of time it takes for the object to cover that distance. The resulting value is the speed of the object, which is generally measured in units of distance per time, such as meters per second (m/s) or kilometers per hour (km/h).

For example, if a car covers a distance of 100 kilometers in 2 hours, its speed would be:

Speed = 100 kilometers / 2 hours = 50 kilometers per hour (km/h)

It is important to note that speed is a scalar quantity, which means it only describes the magnitude of an object's movement and not its direction. To know both the magnitude and direction, we need to use velocity.

Formulas

  • Miles per hour (mph) to kilometers per hour (km/h): 1 mph = 1.60934 km/h
  • Kilometers per hour (km/h) to miles per hour (mph): 1 km/h = 0.621371 mph
  • Meters per second (m/s) to kilometers per hour (km/h): 1 m/s = 3.6 km/h
  • Kilometers per hour (km/h) to meters per second (m/s): 1 km/h = 0.277778 m/s
  • Feet per second (ft/s) to miles per hour (mph): 1 ft/s = 0.681818 mph
  • Miles per hour (mph) to feet per second (ft/s): 1 mph = 1.46667 ft/s
  • Knots (kt) to kilometers per hour (km/h): 1 kt = 1.852 km/h
  • Kilometers per hour (km/h) to knots (kt): 1 km/h = 0.539957 kt

It is important to note that these conversions are based on the standards of the International System of Units (SI), and some countries may use different standards.
